National guidelines recommend minimizing pre-operative testing in lower-risk, stable patients undergoing non-emergent surgery, since it rarely if ever alters the perioperative course and is very costly. Through the ABIM Foundation’s Choosing Wisely® campaign, specialty societies have published lists of “5 things” that constitute frequently overused services.  Excessive pre-operative testing has been identified in lists from the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Vascular Medicine, and the American College of Radiology.  However, excessive pre-operative testing remains common.  This event, co-sponsored by 5 Sections of the New York Academy of Medicine, will address the appropriate use of pre-operative testing.  Panelists will present the issues and describe initiatives within regions aimed at decreasing overuse in this area.  For more information and brochure, click here.

This program is being supported in part by a generous contribution from the ABIM Foundation.
