Now that marijuana (cannabis) is legal for medical and/or recreational use in many states in the US, there has been a significant increase in unintentional poisonings by children. Parents need to know how to keep our children safe and I am so proud of the work that has been done by our residents in New York State regarding this issue (see the linked materials below).
If you have any questions or concerns, please speak with your child’s pediatrician!

The NY PRAC (Pediatric Resident Advocacy Coalition) is a group of pediatric residents who have been working together for the last year to collaborate on advocacy initiatives. We worked to create Childhood Covid Vaccination Posters that have been circulating around NY hospitals, and recently have been working to produce patient education materials to educate families of young children about the risk of cannabis ingestion and safe storage practice as recreational cannabis use becomes legal in NY. We are very excited to have our materials, available in both English and Spanish, ready for distribution!
We are excited to have worked with our partners including the New York Office of Cannabis Management and NYS AAP Chapters 1, 2, and 3 to help review and approve our resources and to the NY/NJ Association Pediatric Program Directors (APPD) for helping fund production and distribution of printed patient resources to NYS Pediatric Residency Programs!
If any residents in your program would like to join our coalition, please have them reach out to be added to our listserv- we have monthly virtual meetings and it has been a great way to connect advocacy-focused residents! Contact dab9292@nyp.org to be added and with any questions!
